British Red Cross Next Steps Scheme
The British Red Cross are well known for their overseas aid work in disaster areas or war zones, but they also support individuals in crisis in the UK, supporting them until the crisis is past and helping them recover. Often this is in relation to health and wellbeing problems. They’re looking for volunteers to get involved with their “Next Steps” scheme. Returning home from hospital can be difficult, particularly if you live alone. The Next Steps scheme trains volunteers to help people who have just visited the A&E department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital– whether they’ve visited because of a broken leg, age-related illnesses or long-term mental health problems. They’re looking for reliable, flexible, friendly volunteers who can talk to people and put them at their ease, and who have a genuine interest in health care. Volunteers will:
· Accompany people home from hospital and provide reassurance
· Befriend them and keep them company
· Provide basic support like shopping or cooking meals
· Assist with basic medical needs, reminding people to take their medication or help administer eye drops
· Listen to people’s needs and refer them to other services if necessary, like libraries, day centres or leisure activities.
When: any time (morning, afternoon or early evening), any day of the week (volunteers put themselves on a rota to be “on call”)
Where: in individual’s homes in the Chelsea and Westminster area
Bedelsford School
Bedelsford School provides a stimulating environment for pupils aged 2 - 17 years with a wide range of physical disabilities and a variety of complex needs. Founded in 1905, the school has evolved to meet the changing needs of children who require a range of therapies alongside their education. The school caters for pupils with profound and multiple learning disabilities as well as those who need expert medical support, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, speech and language teaching and occupational therapy. There are a range of ways that volunteers can get
involved at this lovely school. You can provide support with classroom based activities, sports lessons, school productions and swimming trips. Volunteers are needed to support the physiotherapist sessions and could work alongside the various other therapists based at the school. Anyone who could run specialist activities like photography or hair and make up sessions would be welcomed. Or you might chose just to spend half an hour over a lunch hour chatting and socialising with the pupils. For more information contact Alex
St John Ambulance
On a national scale, St John Ambulance has the largest response capability of any voluntary society. It participates in the National Voluntary Associations Emergency Committee, which is responsible for the national co-ordination and involvement of voluntary organisations in time of war or national disaster. The St John Ambulance provides invaluable assistance at country fairs and events where there are going to be large crowds of people. It is also a place of learning, with the majority of the UK public choosing to learn vital skills in First Aid from fully qualified St John Ambulance trainers across the country. You will be trained in first aid to the highest standard and will accompany an ambulance to many of the large fairs and county events around Surrey and possibly further a field. Very often you may only deal with cut fingers, yet on the rare occasion you will be responsible for a more serious health hazard and have to accompany someone to hospital.
